Eels are likely to take up to 200 years to recover to healthy levels even if Europe acts in concert to save it, a conference was told.Willem Dekker, one of the world’s leading experts on the species, said the fish is in such trouble that he expects it to take “50 to 200 years” to recover.
A recovery plan was instigated by the European Union in 2009 but, he said, too few member states are doing enough to protect the species.
